The MLS All-Stars will look to take their second straight victory against European competition when they take on Roma on Wednesday.
The All-Stars took down Chelsea 3-2 a year ago ending a run of three straight winless All-Star games. In 2011, the team lost 4-0 against Manchester United. In 2010, MLS's top players suffered a 5-2 defeat against United; in 2009 the team tied Everton 1-1.
"What was great about last year, when we won against Chelsea, was not that we won against Chelsea. But at the end of the game, the guys we played against came around and they were actually surprised at how we moved the ball around and really played football, or soccer," Captain Thierry Henry said at a news conference."So that's one of the most important things that when we play Roma on Wednesday, obviously we want to win. But, if they turn around and say we saw some great players and excellent play, that speaks volumes for the league."
"Roma is a world class team and honestly, they're coming off a year [in which] for them, they underachieved a bit," added MLS star Graham Zusi said. "We know that they're going to come out and jumpstart their season as best they can. We're expecting a serious game out of them. We're going to take it seriously as well."
"We're playing against Roma and we have a very short period of time together to prepare for the game," All-Star and Sporting coach Peter Vermes added. "But just knowing the players that we have on this roster, I'm sure we're going to make it extremely exciting and try to give them a very, very good game."
The Italian side was equally excited about playing the best players in the MLS.
"It is fascinating for me and especially for my Roma teammates because it is the first time we play against a team like this," Roma captain Francesco Totti said.
Among the players suiting up for the MLS are Zusi, Henry, Landon Donavan, Chris Wondolowski, Matt Besler, and Nick Rimando amongst others. For a full list of the MLS All-Stars, click HERE.
