Mauricio Ochmann will appear in "El Senor de los Cielos."
In a press statement, Telemundo announced that the Mexican actor would play a crucial role in the final episodes of its successful telenovela. The company stated, "Mauricio Ochmann will play the role of 'Chema' and will change the direction of the series."
The company added that the character Chema was born to an American mother and Mexican father and that he grew up in a world where he constantly saw illegal immigrants crossing the borders. Chema grew up wanting to associate himself with the U.S. drug lords, especially one called Randy, who he ended up working for. According to Telemundo, Chema combines the charismatic qualities of Pablo Escobar with the quiet intelligence of Aurelio Casillas.
Starring Rafael Amaya, Fernanda Castillo and Ximena Herrera, the series follows the life and times of Amado Carillo Fuentes as he became a bonafide Mexican Drug Lord and became the boss of the Juarez Cartel in the 1980s and 1990s.
During this time period, Amado Carrillo became known as "El Señor de Los Cielos" because of the large fleet of jets he used to transport drugs. He was also known for laundering $20 million via Colombia to finance his huge fleet of planes. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration described Carrillo as the most powerful drug trafficker of his era.
He died in a Mexican hospital after undergoing extensive plastic surgery to change his appearance. He is regarded as one of the wealthiest criminals in history.
"El Senor de Los Cielos" also stars Gabriel Porras, Sara Corrales, Julian Arango, Robinson Diaz, Angelica Celaya and Rodolfo Valdes. The soap opera will end on Aug. 5.
