Sony recently announced an upcoming Android update release schedule for its devices, and there's some good news for Sony Xperia Tablet Z owners: it looks like Android 4.2.2 will land in August.
So, Sony's Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* - next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August," Sony Mobile said in a statement on its official blog.
It was back in late June, just around the time that Sony began pushing out Android 4.2 for the Xperia Z smartphone, that a possible Android 4.2 firmware for the Xperia Tablet Z was spotted on the PTCRB website. Initial speculation hinted that this meant the upgrade would roll out soon, and it looks like "soon" really meant August. Android updates are rarely timely, and almost every OEM lags significantly behind Google, a feature that frustrates many longtime Android users.
"On that note, thank you for all the feedback on our Jelly Bean 4.1 rollout for Xperia 2012 products — we're aware the process hasn't been as succinct or as timely as you might've expected....we've heard your frustrations and are constantly improving the way we do things," Sony consoled its customers in the same blog post.
Android 4.2 won't bring a huge refresh to Jelly Bean, and the update will mostly allow for more customization and a greater sense of security. Still, Sony is the only major manufacturer to have released such a specific statement following the release of Android 4.3 on Wednesday, and that bodes well against rivals Samsung and HTC, both of whom have been vague on their software roadmap.
