On July 25, Anna Netrebko and Bryn Terfel will join forces to celebrate Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner's bicentennial at the Verbier festival in Switzerland.
The concert will open with the first act of Verdi's masterpiece "Otello" with Netrebko as Desdemona. It will also include Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko in title role of Otello and Russian Baritone Alexy Markov as Iago. Rising star tenor Francesco DeMuro will play Cassio.
The second half of the concert will be the third act of Die Walkure with Terfel as Wotan. It will also include Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the role of Sieglinde and Swedish soprano Irene Theorin as Brunhilde.
Russian conductor Valery Gergiev will lead the collegiate chorus and the Verbier Festival Orchestra in what promises to be one of the most memorable nights of the festival.
Netrebko has spent the last few months celebrating Verdi's birthday. She recently sang an open air concert with Dimitri Hvorostovsky which was dedicated to the composer. She also recorded a studio album entitled "Verdi" which is due out next month. The Russian soprano will continue in the Verdi repertoire when she makes her role debut in Verdi's "Giovanna D'Arco" at the Salzburg festival and her role debut as Leonora in "Il Trovatore" at the Berlin State Opera. She will also make her role debut as Lady Macbeth in "Macbeth" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In September she will headline the Met's new season in Deborah Warner's production of "Eugene Onegin" alongside Mariusz Kwiecien.
Terfel has spent the last months singing Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Royal Opera House in London and will next star in Verdi's Falstaff in San Francisco. The Bass-baritone recently won a Grammy award for his acclaimed Wotan in the Metropolitan Opera's new "Ring Cycle" DVDs.
The historic concert will be transmitted via Live Stream on medici.tv and broadcast on Swiss radio station Espace 2. The performance will later be available on demand.
