While making the rounds to promote her upcoming talk show, former Today co-host Katie Couric commented on Ann Curry's exit from the NBC morning show.
"I wasn't on the inside of that so it's hard for me to pass judgment but for whatever reason it wasn't clicking," Couric said. "I think Ann has done an incredible job reporting and traveling around the world and bringing some of the far-off stories that are not covered quite enough. I think she'll go on to great things."
Couric added she felt heartbroken on the morning Curry announced her withdrawal from the NBC program on June 28.
"You don't like to see someone disappointed but I really am confident she'll do great things and land on her feet," said Couric.
Couric's comments come after the latest Nielson television ratings show Today is consistently losing viewers to ABC's Good Morning America (GMA) with Savannah Guthrie replacing Curry on the co-anchors desk with Matt Lauer. GMA has won in overall viewers for four-consecutive weeks.
Previously speaking about the Curry-Today show situation during an interview on Spreecast, Couric said, "I still have a lot of great friends that I made over those 15 years on the Today show, and this kind of tumult is really hard for everyone."
Couric served as co-anchor for Today from 1991 to 2006, and is set to debut her syndicated talk show Katie on Sept. 10.
"It's still a work in progress," said Couric about her new show. "But I think it will be at times a single topic show and other times it will be two topics and sometimes even three. [They'll be ] as varied as the impact of technology on our children, how to care for an aging parent, maybe dating in your forties and fifties-something I can relate to. We'll be doing a wide variety of topics."
For Katie, singer Sheryl Crow composed and performed the show's theme song titled "This Day" (below).
