The hit series "Homeland" has become one of the most riveting action thriller series on television. With only two seasons under its belt, it's roped in a generous following swear by its intensities and crafty inner workings. While it is only a TV show, it highlights the dangers and perils of the CIA. Now as the third season approaches fans prepare themselves for new episodes that promise to keep them on the edge of seats, if not falling off completely. In hopes to contain the overflow of excitement, here's a roundup of what fans should expect from the new season.

There have been plenty of additions to the cast, but in particular will will cause a major ruckus. William Abadie will join as an international journalist who could cause Carrie Mathison and Saul Berenson "to explode" in the CIA. He'll make their jobs even more difficult than they already are. Tensions will be worn thin and tempers will erupt.

Other new characters include a Persian woman named Fara whose keen professionalism and intelligence is uncharacteristic of her young age. She will make her first appearance in episode 2, titled "Tower of David," and will quickly claim her place as one of the show's focal characters. Several troubled young adults will also make their grand debuts. One in particular has the potential to become the new suave Don of "Homeland."

One veteran character, Damian Lewis, unfortunately will play less of a prominent role in season 3. His character, Nicholas Brody is marked as "the world's most wanted terrorist" following the season 2 finale. It's disappointing that Brody may be scarce come the new season, but the fact that he'll be in hiding will add a new element of mystery and angst.

Season 3 will also open to a new issue that could scar the department forever. According to co-creator Alex Gansa, it will take a road untaken in the previous two seasons that will serve as the season's driving factor.

"The issue in this season is, what happens if it were learned that a major attack on the United States was sponsored by a state?" Gansa said. "These are the big concerns that we're going to deal with in the first sweep of episodes."

"And then there's the big questions about, you know, where Brody is," Gansa said. "Does anybody know that Carrie helped him get out of the country? And will they ever see each other again?"

There are also rumors of a time jump between season 2 and season 3, giving Dana Brody (Morgan Saylor) some time to mature.

There's a lot at stake as the series' return approaches. Not only will questions be answer, but others will arise and cause trouble for the show's characters.

"Homeland" will return to Showtime September 29. Read the official season 3 synopsis below.

"'Homeland' Season 3 opens during the aftermath of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world's most wanted terrorist -- Nick Brody (Damian Lewis). As Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered professional and personal lives, they are swept up in the political and media firestorm surrounding the terror attack and the subsequent search for Brody's whereabouts."
