A retina display variant and next-generation iPad mini might not see the light of day until early 2014.
China's Economic Daily News reported Apple might delay the iPad mini with Retina Display until the first quarter of 2014. The delay allegedly derailed Apple's original plans to launch the next-generation 7.9-inch tablet this fall.

The report added that the move to early 2014 might result in no iPad mini update this year.
The delay comes a week after "supply chain sources" claimed the iPad mini 2 would likely be delayed due to the inclusion of Retina Display. As DigiTimes posted, sources state the iPad mini 2's launch might be at the end of 2013.
Other rumors about the iPad mini 2 include a delayed launch date to avoid a sales clash with the iPad 5.
In regards to the next 9.7-inch iPad, the tablet is expected to launch this September. Sources from Taiwan claimed that "upstream suppliers" have "mostly finished" production of the next 9.7-inch tablet, and it is unlikely Apple would issue specification changes. The features rumored for the iPad 5 include a thinner bezel design for a larger viewing area, a LED tube, improved battery longevity, and the continuation of Retina Display.
Apple has not issued a comment in regards to the latest tablet rumors.
