A viral campaign has been launched for the upcoming "Godzilla" reboot.
Warner Bros. and Legendary pictures launched a viral campaign in preparation for San Diego's Comic Con. The studio set up a website at Godzillaencounter.com that features two news stories about about possible Godzilla encounters. One is called "There's Something out there" and the other "Breaking News: Japanese Fishing Vessel Loses Signal, Goes Missing."
"Godzilla" was announced last year at comic-con where Warner Bros. showed a video of a destroyed city and also featured the voice of Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director on the Manhattan Project. The studio later debuted a poster for the new film, which features Japanese writing and the title "Godzilla." This year, Warner Bros. returns to the exposition and will present the progress on the film. It has not been confirmed whether director Gareth Edwards will be present or whether cast members Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche or David Strathairn will be present.
The last time a "Godzilla" movie was released was in 1998. The film failed at the box office and only made $136 million. Previous to that version, there was also "Godzilla 1985," and, of course, the original, which was a 1954 Japanese film.
British director Edwards made his directional debut in 2010 when he directed the award-winning film "Monsters." The film was nominated for a British Academy Award and won several first feature film awards.
The new "Godzilla" film tells the story a giant radioactive monster called Godzilla who awakens from its sleep to wreak destruction on its creators. It also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Wattanabe, and Sally Hawkins and is written by Max Borenstein and Dave Callaham. "Godzilla" will be released on May 16, 2014 nationwide.
