Saints Row 4 promises to be an utterly ridiculous and entertaining open-world game, and will offer players the chance to mix superpowers and crazy weaponry to fight aliens or just mess with citizens within the game. Gamers should take the opportunity to revel in the chaos now, though—developer Volition may take the series into new territory with future games, according to design director Scott Phillips.
When asked by Gamereactor if Saints Row 4 would be the grand finale of the series, Phillips confirmed that the game will at least conclude the character's story for now:
"We're definitely considering Saints Row IV sort of the end of that saga of this character and the Saints as they are. So if there's any more future Saints Rows - which you know we always hope there will be, we hope there's fans for future games like that - they will probably continue in a different direction."
Considering the high bar set by Saints Row 4 in terms of both sheer madness and completely insane gameplay, it may be best for the series to take a breather so that the creative team can focus on other games and slowly build up ideas for any future Saints Row games. After all, Phillips revealed that he did not think the team could top Saints Row: The Third in terms of bring gamers to wacky new places:
"I remember telling people: 'I don't know how we're going to top this. We've got a mission on Mars, we've got a heli-carrier, we've got zombies. Where do we go from here?' But everybody took a vacation, we came back, started fresh, and very quickly we came up with: 'Well we've got to have... let's do superpowers. It's something we've always been talking about. Wouldn't it be great to run as fast as a car, or jump over a building, or be able to pick up somebody with your mind and throw them across the city.'"
It will be interesting to see what kind of territory Saints Row explores in the future, but for now, gamers can look forward to the fourth game in the series, which will be available Aug. 20.
