Shakira scored a victory in her legal battle against ex-boyfriend Antonio De La Rua, after a judge in Geneva denied the request of De La Rua to have access to one of Shakira's bank accounts.
De La Rua claimed that he should have access to the megabuck bank accounts of the Colombian singer, suing Shakira for $100 million in damages.
According to De La Rua, he should be given ownership of Shakira's Swiss bank accounts because he is responsible for establishing the highly-successful "Shakira" brand during their time together as couple. He told the court that he is responsible for the singer's $300-million deal with Live Nation five years ago.
However, the Swiss court ruled in favor of Shakira, citing De La Rua's failure to present evidence of any professional agreements or written contracts that could have corroborated his claims. De La Rua previously told the court that he and Shakira had made oral business agreements in the past.
This development came shortly after New York Times reported that the 36-year-old singer had strong evidence that proved the ex-boyfriend could not sue her. Shakira filed a declaration in the Los Angeles County Superior Court recently, presenting e-mails where De La Rua admitted that he had no stake in Shakira's company.
In an e-mail sent to Shakira on Jan. 15, 2011, De La Rua allegedly admitted, "I am not a partner in any of your companies. You are the sole owner of all of them."
On the other hand, the copy of the e-mail sent to Shakira's mother on Jan. 16, 2011 reads: "Just so you know, I am not Shakira's partner in coquito or any of her other companies. We have everything very neatly and she is the sole owner and beneficiary of her companies."
The "Hips Don't Lie" singer also stated that she only hired De La Rua as his business advisor out of pity, reiterating the fact that her ex-boyfriend received compensation for being one of her numerous advisers. She also added that they even signed a prenuptial agreement in 2006, renouncing their rights one another's assets, including future earnings.
Shakira, who lived with De La Rua for seven years before ending their relationship in 2010, is currently in a relationship with soccer star Gerard Pique, the father of her 7-month-old child, Milan Pique Mebarak.
