In the first major deal of the NHL free agency, Daniel Alfredsson has signed with the Detroit Red Wings for one year.

According to TSN, the deal is for approximately $5.5 million. Alfredsson became Ottawa's all-time leading scorer with 1,108 points in 1,178 games since 1995. He scored 26 points in 48 games in 2012-13 and helped the team reach the playoffs for the second straight year. Alfredsson never won a Stanley Cup with the Senators, but he did reach the finals in 2007 when the team lost in five games to the Anaheim Ducks.

Here are some Twitter reactions to the signing.

@blazsox : With Alfredsson going to the #Red Wings , that means the #Senators are a divisional opponent under the new @NHL conferences.

@FrancisMoran: I grow sad. RT @nhlontsn: Detroit Red Wings  sign Daniel Alfredsson to a 1-year, $5.5 million deal

@j3bud : It's going to be weird seeing Alfredsson wear a different sweater this year #redwings

@GoldwatersGhost : I don't get the Alfredsson signing. It's not like the #RedWings are going to win the cup. Why do that to your legacy?

‏@DeafHockeyON : Daniel Alfredsson going to the Detroit red wings? How about that one folks. Personally I think it's the best move the red wings ever made.
