According to research by Chart-Track, the Xbox 360 is just days away from overtaking the Nintendo Wii as the UK's best-selling console of this generation. According to the recent numbers, the 360 is regularly outselling its rivals, and with 8.4 million units already sold, analysts are confident in calling its victory over the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.
"This is an historic milestone and our sincere thanks goes to each and every person that has bought and enjoyed Xbox 360 over the past eight years," Director of Xbox and entertainment Harvey Eagle said to MCV in a statement.
"As you saw at E3 earlier this month, we announced a new Xbox 360 form factor and we are committed to ensuring Xbox 360 remains the best place to play games, connect with friends and enjoy your entertainment. You'll see great exclusive content coming not only to Xbox 360, but also to Xbox One later this year."
Interestingly, the Xbox 360 is still not all-time best selling home console in the country. That honor goes to the PlayStation 2, which has so far moved over 10 million units.
Still, it's a very positive sign for Microsoft, who have been struggling to catch up after a disastrous reveal and a muddled E3 showing. If nothing else, this recent news proves that the Xbox fan base is still massive. With Microsoft's recent move to cut their controversial DRM systems, they may have taken the first step in retaking the lead as we approach the holiday sales season.
The Xbox 360 was originally launched in 2005, making this the longest console generation so far. To date, over 76 million units have been sold worldwide, alongside 24 million Kinect sensors. Its successor, the Xbox One, will be available in November for $499/€499/£429.
