Wolfenstein: The New Order is the latest attempt to bring the classic franchise to modern audiences, and the team at Machine Games is dedicated to bring their vision of the game to life. Unfortunately, this means that the upcoming game will not include multiplayer. Peter Hines, the marketing vice president of publisher Bethesda, recently sat down with Eurogamer to explain this decision. He explained that Machine Games did not even think about adding multiplayer to the game, and Bethesda was not about to try and force a large component such as that into the game if the developer did not want it there.
We talked to Machine Games about the game they wanted to make and multiplayer wasn't in their thought-process. "We're not going to force it down their throats and say, 'Well, the last games did, so you have to do it.' These guys do cool stuff. If you look at The Chronicles of Riddick or you look at The Darkness, those games have a creative element to them that is similar to the things they're doing in Wolfenstein and that's what attracted us to them, and that's what attracted us to their vision of Wolfenstein. And we said 'Okay, run with that.' We're not going to say, 'Oh, we'll find somebody else to do the multiplayer.'"
This move is not very surprising, considering the amount of single player franchises the publisher has in their roster. For example, the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series both reside in Bethesda's stable. If Machine Games did not organically come up with ideas for multiplayer for the game, then it is probably best to leave it out. So while fans may be disappointed that Wolfenstein: The New Order does not have a six on six Mechahitler deathmatch mode, they can at least focus on the excellent single player experience Machine Games is sure to make. The game will be out on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year.
