The PlayStation 4 has quickly become the hottest console after a strong showing by Sony during E3 last week. Immediately after preorders were openned, gamers began swarming Internet sites and their local video game stores to claim their very own PlayStation 4 on the day the console is released. However, there may not be enough PlayStation 4's to go around.
Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton, speaking to Forbes, warned eager gamers that the demand for the console may outweigh the supply they can come up with, saying, "Given the technology that (Sony Computer Entertainment is) offering, given the software lineup, given the price point we have, that (it will) have consumers interested in excess of what (the company is) able to manufacture."
This story is nothing new, as millions of gamers attempt to secure the newest console while manufacturers struggle to keep up with demand. Indeed, some of the current demand may stem from fears that, if a gamer does not preorder and secure their next-gen console, then they will have to wait months before being able to pick one up.
Tretton also discussed how the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3's launches will be different, specifically how the company is going from the highest priced, high end system to the lower priced yet still powerful system.
He said,"I think now we've got the most powerful machine we've ever created, but it's developer-friendly, and it's consumer-friendly, and we can sell it at a reasonable price. Clearly, I'd prefer to be in the position we're in today, as opposed to the high hill we had to climb back in 2006. Ultimately did pay dividends, but the climb is gonna be a lot less painful this time around, in terms of establishing PlayStation 4 to the masses."
The PlayStation 4 will be out sometime later this year.
