France has influenced the sixth-generation of the Pokémon franchise.

In what may be considered as trivia for some Pokémon fans, each region of the franchise is based on an actual location. The first four generations were based on areas of Japan while the fifth-generation - Unova - embarked for New York City.

"Pokémon X and Y" will also take place in a region based outside of Japan with France taking the spotlight.

The French influence was confirmed during the Nintendo Developer Roundtable for "Pokémon X and Y" at the 2013 E3 conference.

"France is one of the many countries that really has a focus on like beauty, and beauty was really one of the themes that we had for Pokémon X and Y' so we wanted to kind of see how we can express that beauty in the games," said Pokémon X and Y and Game Freak Inc. Director Junichi Masuda.

Masuda's comment might have been premature as The Pokémon Company International President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara stated afterwards that they weren't suppose to talk about France's influence.

"But you went ahead and said it, so," laughed Ishihara.

Examples of France's influence on the games include the protagonists' gameplay attire and the tower in Lumiose City.
