The reveal of footage from the new Super Smash Bros game at E3 has excited fans of the fighting game eager to see the next version of the beloved game. In addition, gamers can expect a version of the game to come out on the 3DS to give players a handheld take on the game. However, the two different versions of the game will not feature cross-platform play, as was rumored. This news was confirmed by Masahiro Sakurai, director of Sora Ltd. in an interview with Joystiq.
Sakurai says that the reason gamers will not be able to play the game with both Wii U and 3DS owners is that the two game will have different stages, thus making cross-platform play impossible. Despite this limitation, the games will connect with each other in another way. The 3DS will offer the chance to customize characters and add them to the Wii U version. It is unknown what exactly these customizations will be, but Sakurai confirmed that they will not be costumes for characters, as he feels that this would defeat the purpose of the characters all being unique in their own ways. He also said that these customizations would not be unlocked through repetitive tasks, but rather done so in a way that helps ease the transition between the two.
The new Super Smash Bros does not have a set release date yet on either the Wii U or 3DS. Many fans have begun speculating on what new characters will make appearances in the game. The three new characters revealed at E3 were The Villager from Animal Crossing, the Wii Fit Trainer, and Capcom's own Mega Man. Both the Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer has already become memes, with the Villager becoming a crazed ax murderer and the Wii Fit Trainer being portrayed as a badass martial artist.
