The Last of Us, Naughty Dog's critically-acclaimed swan song for the PS3, launched today to the delight of worldwide fans, but players this morning may have been better off if they disconnected their consoles from the internet before inserting their freshly bought disc into the system. A game breaking auto-save glitch which disabled the ability to preserve progress in the campaign mode has reportedly afflicted numerous copies of the title through the 1.01 patch. Thankfully, Sony confirms that the developer has isolated the problem and that the game should work as intended now. Read the official statement below:
"Some players may have been encountering an issue with The Last of Us which affected the autosave feature, which can result in a loss of progress in the single-player campaign. The team at Naughty Dog has been diligently investigating as soon as we heard from our community, and we have determined the cause to be on servers for The Last of Us which were capturing player statistics. We have made a change to ours to address this issue. All players should quit any game in progress out to the XMB and restart The Last of Us. All players can now enjoy single-player and online multiplayer matches as normal.
We will continue to monitor forums and social media, and investigate any other issues that may present themselves."
While the details are spotty, various people have allegedly avoided the bug by disabling their internet connection. IGN reports, "For some people, staying offline with the patch installed solves the problem. Others stayed offline and deleted the patch to get auto-save to work."
The Last of Us follows the journey of protagonists Joel and Ellie as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a zombie-creating fungus infection.
Aside from the game's single player campaign, The Last of Us also features a multiplayer mode with two game types. The first, Survivors, is a tactical mode with no respawns which crowns the team that wins the first of seven rounds. The second, Supply Raid, provides teams with a pool of twenty respawns and asks players to gather resources within the map.
The Last of Us is also a day-one digital game, with an optional season pass available now. The pass includes a new single player chapter, two new map packs, and grants players enhanced crafting skills, healing, reload speed, and ammo capacity. An hour-and-a-half long documentary is also included with the pass.
By all accounts, Naughty Dog's latest has roused an inspiring response from the gaming community, but beware of the day-one patch.
