Kingdom Hearts 3 was one of the biggest surprise reveals during this year's E3, as the game was announced as being in development for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a short video. Though the game remains a mystery, there are some facts we know about the game.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting Kingdom Hearts 3 for quite some time. In the gap between the second and third games, Square Enix has released several handheld titles in the series, which were met with various amounts of fan enthusiasm as they grew impatient for Kingdom Hearts 3. The game's plot was set up during the events of the last handheld title, Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance on the Nintendo 3DS. Sora, Donald, and Goofy all return, along with recurring characters Riku and Mickey Mouse, and must defeat the evil Master Xehanort once and for all.
There was a brief showing of gameplay in the reveal video, showing Sora facing a literal wave of Heartless that is chasing him. The swarm moves as one entity, and Sora is seen dodging and even riding the wave to avoid the Heartless. While this does not indicate much, it does show the series familiar battle system in action. The game is being developed by Square Enix's Osaka studio, according to SilionEra. The studio is responsible for many Kingdom Hearts Projects, including the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix that is set to come out later this year.
With news of Kingdom Hearts 3 being developed, many fans are hoping that Disney will let some of their new properties to appear in the game. Specifically, Disney now owns the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, and if they allowed either to have a part in Kingdom Hearts 3 i can imagine many fans openly weeping at the prospect of Darth Vader or Tony Stark helping out Sora and company.
Look out for more Kingdom Hearts 3 developments as the game continues through development in the coming year.
