Owners of last year's Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablets might feel slightly outdated now that Samsung has announced the new lineup of Galaxy Tab 3 tablets, but there's some good news around the bend: Samsung should be updating both the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 to Android 4.2.2 by September.
The report comes to us via SamMobile, a reliable Samsung-centric website known for its firmware and hardware knowledge.
"Samsung wants to update the Galaxy Tab 2 to Android 4.1.2 and stop with Android 4.2.2! Samsung is even trying the same with the first generation of the Samsung Galaxy Tab (GT-P7300 / GT-P7500)," SamMobile wrote.
"Samsung will no longer support the Galaxy Tab 2 after the Android 4.2.2 update. The updates must be done before the end of September," the report goes on to say.
While the fact that Galaxy Tab 2 owners probably won't see another Android update after Android 4.2.2 doesn't bode well for long term thinkers, it's still nice to know that the Galaxy Tab 2 will be able to catch up to the newer interfaces, at least for a while.
Samsung has a history of incorporating features from its newer devices into updates for older devices. For instance, the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note devices received a host of new features derived from the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 experience. The same is expected to happen with the new Galaxy S4 features. If the trend follows, then the Galaxy Tab 2 Android 4.2.2 update, when it does roll out, could very well contain some of the Galaxy Tab 3's new charms.
