Over the years, McDonald's has been no stranger to lawsuits and varied questions over the quality of its food. Now, a gospel singer is suing the company because of the effect one of its sandwiches had on their voice.
The singer, Jacqueline Simpson, said that she ordered a chicken sandwich from a Manhattan McDonald's and received a bit more than she bargained for. She claims that in the sandwich was a piece of glass that tore at her vocal chords.
"Now when I sing, I have a hoarse, rattly voice," Simpson said. "I still sing alto, but I can't sing soprano like I used to."
Simpson, 52, stated that the piece of glass was larger than a penny, and that the incident happened three years ago in May of 2010. Since then, her injury has also impacted Simpson's ability to do her day job as well.
"I have to make a lot of calls for work, and I have to tell people that I'm not a man,'' Simpson said. "Before, that never happened."
Simpson has now filed a lawsuit against the corporation for an undisclosed amount of money. It is unclear how much clout her legal action will have since such a large amount of time has passed since the incident, but the owner of the McDonald's Simpson ate at is not taking this lightly:
"Rest assured I take these matters very seriously," he said. "Providing safe food and beverages is a top priority at my restaurant. Upon learning about this claim, I took immediate action to gather the facts and began an investigation into the matter. As this is a pending legal matter, it would [be] inappropriate to comment further."
As noted earlier, McDonald's is no stranger to lawsuits and controversy. There have been numerous suits levied against the company in recent years, including the following: it's coffee being too hot, it's food making people fat, serving mis-advertised and non-halal meat to Muslims, and children eating used condoms in the play area.
In a similar incident Oklahoma native Katherine Ashowo reportedly bit into one of McDonald's chocolate chip cookies, only to find a piece of sharp plastic that cut her tongue. She did not press charges in that case, though did request an apology from McDonald's.
