David Liaño Gonzalez, a Mexican mountaineer, became the first climber ever to double summit on Mount Everest in the same season.

Liaño Gonzalez reached the top of the world's tallest mountain via both the north and south sides of Mt. Everest.

The 33-year-old Mexico City native reached the summit of Everest on Sunday, first from the Tibetan north side after climbing to the mountain's top on May 11 from the south side in Nepal.

Asian Trekking posted a statement on its website in which it highlighted a string of records that were broken during that same week. Other firsts came from British explorer, Daniel Hughes, who became the first person to give a live interview from the world's tallest mountain when he spoke to the BBC from his smartphone. Another British climber, Kenton Cool reached the top of Everest for the 11th time, a first for British mountaineers and Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to climb Mt. Everest.

Liaño Gonzalez was accompanied by high altitude Sherpa Samden Bhote when he summited Everest on his journey from the Nepalese side and climbed with Mingma Sherpa on Sunday to conclude the double summit.

David Liaño Gonzalez is a businessman and adventurer born and raised in Mexico City, where he still lives to this day. His Wikipedia page highlights his career in trekking, which began when he climbed volcanoes around Mexico City. The page also details how Liaño became seriously interested in alpinism when he joined the Mexican Alpine Club in 2003 and traveled to Bolivia where he climbed three important peaks in that country.

Liaño's other mountaineering achievements include climbing the Seven Summits, which means reaching the top of the highest mountains in each of the seven continents.

Liaño has also actively maintained a blog from which he has detailed his experiences climbing different mountains across the globe since 2010. During the last few days he actively updated on the status ofhis journey  through his Facebook, Twitter and personal webpage, which gave a unique insight into his experiences

Liaño Gonzalez achievement comes as a surprise to many in Mexico as mountaineering rarely is a matter of widespread attention in that country. An official congratulatory statement is expected from the Mexican government in the next few days.

Liaño's feat comes shortly  before the 60th anniversary of the first ascent to the  top of Everest by New Zealander Edmund Percival Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay which was achieved  on May 29, 1953
