Verizon Wireless is offering a special discount for the iPhone 5, however, it is only for select customers.

Usually priced at $199.99, Verizon Wireless lowered the iPhone 5 cost to $99.99, but only for only for customers wanting to upgrade from a basic phone, sort of.

According to GottaBeMobile, Verizon stated, "[Many] basic phone customers are interested in moving to a smartphone and the iPhone 5 is an ideal solution for those customers. This promotion gives customers an affordable option to help them make the transition."

The offer is not for every customer with a basic phone but only for those the carrier identifies as worthy of an upgrade.

The promotion, however, won't last long. The $99.99 price tag ends June 30, two weeks after Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conferences reaches its conclusion in San Francisco.

With the $99.99 price, customers must sign a brand new two-year contract with the carrier.

According to Apple Insider, the offer won't be seen on Verizon's iPhone 5 online webpage but at the My Verizon page. The deal will likely be promoted as a $100 bill credit on their next bill.

Verizon's promotion comes as it revealed the iPhone accounted for more than half of their smartphone sales during the first quarter. Verizon stated it activated 7.2 million smartphones, and two million were the iPhone 5.
