One of the top contenders for the upcoming "50 Shades of Grey" movie may have just gotten a major boost. In a day shrouded in darkness, what began as tragedy could turn into a golden opportunity for Ian Somerhalder. "The Vampire Diaries" star has split with his Hollywood starlet girlfriend Nina Dobrev, which could be for the better. Why is this good news for Somerhalder? Now he has an even greater chance of snagging the role of Mr. Grey. There's always a silver lining.

Somerhalder has long been a fan favorite to star in the "50 Shades of Grey" film, but speculation surrounding his on and off-screen relationship with Dobrev has been cause for worry. First, she too has been tossed into casting rumors, and many fans feel uncomfortable with the two "Vampire Diaries" stars together once again on the big screen, claiming that it would take away from the movie. It would feel like we were in Mystic Falls, anxiously waiting for Christian to sink his fangs into Ana's neck, in a literal sense of course.

Second, if Somerhalder were cast as Christian and some other Hollywood hottie snagged the role of Anastasia, how would Dobrev feel about watching her boo get down on dirty on the big screen with someone else? That's a bridge any "50 Shades" candidate in a committed relationship is going to face come casting day. Actors should always discuss with their significant others before jumping into bed with someone else on camera, and there's a lot of 'jumping' into beds in "50 Shades." Well, luckily for Somerhalder, this is no longer an issue.

Although tragic, the breakup remained cordial. According to Us Weekly, the duo will remain professional and are still very good friends. So does this mean they'll continue to work together outside of "The Vampire Diaries?" Now that the two have split, a potential matchup in the "50 Shades" film could be very interesting. It would add a whole new layer of raunchiness. Interesting.

Fans will have to wait and see what E. L. James and Universal studios have to say about it, and we all know how long that could take. Until then, enjoy the fan made trailer featuring ex-lovers Dobrev and Somerhalder.
