Nintendo recently announced a slew of new games coming primarily to the 3DS, but one game that stood out among the rest of the games announced was a sequel to the fabled Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This game seeks to follow up one of the most fondly remembered Zelda titles of all time, and Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma is confident they can deliver.
Speaking to CNET, Aonuma discussed several new details about the game. He revealed that the Dark World, a major area of the first game that represented the more evil side of Hyrule. It is unclear what role the Dark World will play in the sequel, but judging how important it was in the last game, it will most likely have a prominent role again.
Aonuma also revealed that the major new mechanic of this Legend of Zelda game, the ability to become a drawing on a wall and move about the levels as such, was inspired by a different Legend of Zelda game than A Link to the Past. In Ocarina of Time, Phantom Ganon can jump into six identical paintings in the walls of the Forest Temple. Aonuma thought, "What if Link could have the same power?", and thus Link's new power was born.
This new power allows Link to switch from the top-down 3D world of the game to a side-scrolling two dimensional view, leading to a lot of shifting back and forth between perspectives. Some have wondered if such changes would be better with the 3DS's glasses-free 3D turned off; however, Aonuma is insistent that, while everyone will enjoy the game regardless, the full experience of the game requires the 3D Slider to be all the way up.
