'Bones' fans finally got what they wanted in Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan's (Emily Deschanel) relationship before it was cruelly snatched away by Pelant (guest star Andrew Leeds) during the season eight finale Monday night. The episode, entitled "The Secret in the Siege," helped set the stage for a now highly anticipated ninth season of the hit crime drama on FOX.

Fans saw as Brennan came around to asking Booth to marry her. However, their engagement was cut short due to Pelant's insistence to remain the center of attention in their lives. After discovering who Pelant was using to attack FBI agents close to him, Booth received a call from the evil genius, who tells him he must break off the engagement or else be the cause of five random deaths.

In a heartbreaking final scene, Booth breaks off the engagement with Brennan, without telling her why he's doing it. Although she acts like it doesn't affect her, fans see her briefly break down when he can't see her.

Executive producer Stephen Nathan spoke to TVLine to talk about the finale and revealed some juicy details of the upcoming season. When asked why Booth just couldn't tell Brennan the truth about why he was breaking off the engagement, Nathan said, "No. There's too much at stake. It's not just Brennan's life but Christine's, too. He has a daughter he has to think about. And Pelant is crazy. Booth doesn't want to test those waters, not before they figure out how to get them."

Nathan said that fans can rest assured; Pelant will be caught. "Pelant will not live forever," the EP said. He added that there will be a slight time jump in the upcoming season premiere and that the strain to Booth and Brennan's relationship will be felt.

"There's a secret, and relationships don't really thrive when one or both parties are withholding something," Nathan told TVLine. "And I think that's what we're going to see. And we do have some episodes that we're developing now that embrace that conflict."

Fans will have to patiently wait for the upcoming season, which will hit airwaves early this fall.
