Daft Punk are on a roll, and they won't be stopping anytime soon. Their triumphant comeback marks one of the greatest we've seen in recent memory. They've kept their return shrouded in secrecy, releasing bits and pieces along the way, building the insurmountable hype surrounding their upcoming album, Random Access Memories.
Their first single spawned mayhem. Before its release, hundreds of homemade versions could be found across the Internet, each one looping the limited samples to imitate the complete track. Since its release last week, "Get Lucky" has accumulated nearly 5.5 million views on YouTube, graced the top of iTunes Top 10 Songs list and broke Spotify streaming records. The album is still more than three weeks away and the single's success continues to astonish the music industry. Now, Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" is well on course to becoming the highest-selling record of 2013 so far, shifting more than 100,000 units in a little over a week.
The Saturdays and Sean Paul held the previous record for their song "What About Us,' which sold 114,259 units in its first week in March. Daft Punk's previous fastest-selling single was "One More Time" from their 2001 album, Discovery, which sold 58,834 units.
"Get Lucky" features singer/producer Pharrell Williams and legendary funk guitarist Nile Rodgers. Pharrell's ascending melodies create wide harmonic chords that blend perfectly with Rodgers' tight rhythmic guitar chops. Williams and Rodgers both worked closely with the French duo on Random Access Memories and talk about their experience in a promotional interview series called "The Collaborators." Check out their interviews below.
Random Access Memories will hit stores May 21, and if "Get Lucky" is any indication, the album will easily establish itself as the soundtrack to summer 2013. Until then, keep rocking out to "Get Lucky" as it continues its course toward the highest selling record of the year.
