The Boston bombing investigation reveals that the Tsarnaev brothers were planning an attack on Times Square, according to a statement from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday.

"Last night we were informed by the FBI that the surviving attacker revealed that New York City was next on their list of targets," Bloomberg said.

The suspects reportedly came up with the idea spontaneously while conversing in a hijacked SUV following the Boston Marathon attack, according to New York City Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving bombing suspect, told investigators that he spoke to his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, about going to New York to "party." But after further questioning, Dzhokhar admitted their plan to use the rest of their explosives in the city, Kelly said.

The brothers' plan "fell apart" after their hijacked SUV started to run out of fuel in the Boston area. That is when the driver of the vehicle was ordered to drive up to a gas station so they could refuel, but the driver was able to escape and police eventually caught up with them---Kelly said.

Five pipe bombs and a "pressure-cooker bomb" was with the brothers in the SUV, Kelly added.

New York officials say that they know Dzhokhar was in New York last year, probably in November---according to Kelly, adding that there is no evidence suggesting that the city is currently a target of an attack in relation to the Boston bombings.
