On April 22nd Paul Verhoeven's new film "Tricked" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Verhoeven arrived on the red carpet with actress Carolien Spoor and producers Rene Mioch, and Mardou Jacobs.
The film tells the story of Remco whose life takes a turn for the worst during his 50th birthday. His business partners are scheming behind his back to sell his business and his former mistress shows up pregnant.
The film was conceived by screenwriter Kim Van Kooten who wrote the first four pages of the film but left it up to the general audience to finish the story. Verhoeven stated that he found the process to be refreshing and creative.
600-700 scripts were submitted and Verhoeven said that there were not many brilliant scripts. However he said, "there were enough elements that were okay and interesting and a lot of things that I wouldn't have really not invented, you know, because I don't think that way."
He added that it takes a certain talent to make a film and said "Filmmaking might be something like writing, you know. Everyone can write, more or less. Now of course there are only a few good writers, that can write in a way that you'd want to read... Here you need 15-20 people around you that also must be talented enough to make the movie look okay."
The movie scored good reviews out of Tribeca. Latinos Post said Tricked is "one of the most engaging and entertaining escapes from the overall dark and somber tone of the festival."
Variety added "A mildly amusing medium-length soaper packaged with "Paul's Experience."
"Tricked" screened at the Rome Film festival last year. It was part of the Tribeca Talks after the Movie. Verhoeven had a discussion panel after the film.
The Tribeca runs until April 28th.
