We all knew the new Daft Punk release would be big. We've been eagerly waiting eight years for their return. Although we listen to their timeless tracks over and over again without issue, the itch for something new has become unbearable. So when Daft Punk released their first single, "Get Lucky," from their upcoming album Random Access Memories last week, fans finally got the chance to scratch that itch, and that's exactly what they did.
To say that fans enjoyed the new single would be an understatement. People had it blasting on repeat, everywhere. Pharrell Williams even performed the tune three times in a row at the THC launch party in Brooklyn. "Get Lucky" has accumulated more than 1.75 million views on YouTube and sat comfortably at the top of iTunes Top 10 Songs list all weekend long. To top it all off, they've even broken Spotify streaming records.
"Get Lucky" experienced the biggest first day of global streaming in the service's history, marking it a worldwide success. In the UK and US, users streamed the songs more times than any other track, surpassing Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" in the US and Bastille's Pompeii in the UK.
Will Hope, director of label relations at Spotify, said Daft Punk "have once again shown themselves to be true innovators, not only with their new musical direction and the stellar cast of collaborators they're working with, but also by undertaking one of the best album campaigns we've seen for some time. We expect the album to become one of the biggest, if not the biggest, on Spotify this year."
That's a bold statement, but the French synth pop duo has already proved themselves with "Get Lucky." After such a delectable taste of what's to come on Random Access Memories, the world cannot wait for the next course. "Get Lucky" has fueled the Daft Punk flame, and now the wildfire is out of control.
