Manchester United can clinch its 20th title when it takes on Aston Villa on Monday.
With 81 points, United currently holds a 13 point lead on second place Manchester City with only five games to go. United would have to lose its remaining matches and City would have to win its final five to steal away the victory; this is highly unlikely based on the performances of each club this season.
In fact, City boss Roberto Mancini has already conceded the title to his arch rivals. "United won a lot of games in a row and deserve to win the title. The reason there is a gap is because there is more attitude and they wanted to win it after last year," said Mancini.
What happens after United clinches the title? According to United coach Alex Ferguson the clinch does not end the team's season; instead, the Red Devils have a greater aim in sight. That goal is to pass Chelsea's record-setting 95 points in a season; the Blues achieved that feat back in 2005 under Coach Jose Mourinho.
"It's not beyond the team at all," said Ferguson of hitting 96 points. "If you're asking if Manchester United can win five games in a row, well how many times have we done that? There won't be any slacking off by the players."
Meanwhile Aston Villa is three points out of a relegation spot. However, a loss would potentially leave them vulnerable to being caught by Wigan Athletic.
Prediction: Manchester United has a tremendous edge in this one. The team has a chance to win the title in front of its fans and will certainly not waste the opportunity. Do not overlook the team's desire to top the 2005 record either; 5-0 Manchester United.
