In our increasingly digital world, it is no surprise to see young children interested in their parents or siblings smartphones or tablets. For those parents worried about their children flushing away their time playing games on the devices, here are the top 5 apps for the iPhone and iPad aimed at children.

5. Math Games Math VS. Zombies - This free app by Tap To Learn helps children with their math skills by having them cure zombies through solving math problems. The app is rated for children age nine and up, both because it involves zombies (who look more like cold victims than the undead) and involves some more advanced math problems younger children may not be ready for.

4. The Electric Company Wordball - This free game put out by PBS, based on the popular series, helps young children take spoken words and translate them to print using arcade-style games. The game also features videos from The Electric Company and celebrities such as Jimmy Fallon.

3. The Human Body Explained By Tom-Discovery - This app helps children learn more about the human body. While there is a free version of this app, much of the content requires users to pay for it.

2. BBC Earth Wonders - This app, which is available for $3.99, lets kids explore the world's regions and animals, all without leaving the living room. With the huge amounts of unique pictures and videos BBC has to offer, this app is worth the price of admission.

1. DIY.Org - This free app tells kids to do something no other app does: get off the iphone/ipad. This app gives kids skill patches for completing tasks in the real world, all in the do-it-yourself spirit.  Kids can then share videos of their projects with other kids, and receive encouragement from others.
