Verizon Wireless has posted their first quarterly earnings of 2013, and it's good news for Apple's smartphones.
According to the carrier, 7.2 million smartphones were activated during the quarter, of which, 28 percent were new to Verizon.
Of the new smartphones activated, according to Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo, Apple's iPhone series accounted for more than half of them. Four million iPhones were recorded, and of the Apple smartphone figures, half were of the iPhone 5. Two million units were the iPhone 5 while the remaining two million were older models.
Verizon's 4G LTE device activations grew to 5.9 million units. The carrier noted 54 percent of their total data traffic are on 4G LTE networks and available in 491 markets.
Information about Android or Microsoft Windows Phone 8 devices were not provided, but were likely part of the remaining 3.2 million activations.
Verizon listed four points as their summary:
- Improve revenue mix through key strategic areas,
- Transform service delivery and increase operating efficiency,
- Invest in a disciplined manner for future growth,
- Sustain cash flow and earnings profile.

The sales of the iPhone 5 were also seen for rival T-Mobile. As Latinos Post previously reported, T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert told CNET the carrier had "one of its biggest weekends in the history of the company" and thanks in part of the launch of the iPhone 5 last weekend.
Although Sievert did not disclose specific numbers, he stated, "We had really ambitious internal goals, and we beat them."
