Wigan Athletic made be headed for relegation but the team has a major chance to redeem its season by earning an FA Cup finals berth on Saturday when it takes on Millwall.
The game has additional significance for the team's owner Dave Whelan. Fifty-three years ago, Whelan, as defender for Blackburn, was carried off an FA Cup match on a stretcher with a broken leg. A win in this match would help redeem said low point for him.
"It will be a significant day for the chairman because he has been through such a lot," said Wigan manager Roberto Martinez. "The FA Cup is something very special for him."
Wigan entered the tournament in the third round with a 1-1 draw against AFC Bournemouth. In the rematch, the team pulled off a 1-0 victory. In the fourth round, Wigan defeated Macclesfield Town 1-0 before taking down Huddersfield Town 4-1. In their most recent match, Wigan dominated Everton 3-0.
Their opponents Millwall entered the third round with a 1-0 win over Preston North End. In the fourth round, the team beat down Premier league side Aston Villa 2-1 before taking down Luton Town in the fifth round. In the quarterfinals, Millwall drew 0-0 against Blackburn Rovers but won 1-0 in the rematch.
Prediction: Anything is possible in this tournament. But Wigan has a greater pressure heading into this match. Millwall is the underdog and will enter the game loose and ready to take down the premier league side. However, Wigan wins 2-1.
