With all the analysts weighing in, speculation about Apple's 2013 lineup is steadily ramping up. One KGI Securities analyst has gone on record to say that high-profile upcoming Apple devices, including the iPhone 5S and the iPad mini 2, are facing delays that could push back their release dates later than most people would expect.
Ming-chi Kuo from KGI says that a number of developmental issues are the reason for holding these products back. One of the reasons for the iPhone 5S delay is because of Apple's decision to try and include a fingerprint sensor (keep in mind this hasn't been confirmed by Apple).
"Apple has to work out how to prevent interference from the black and white coating material under the cover glass," Kuo said. "Apple is the first to attempt this function and technology, and time is needed to find the right coating material, which will likely affect iPhone 5S shipments."
He says another reason for a later-than-expected iPhone 5S launch is the need for more time to work on iOS 7.
For the iPad mini 2, Kuo cites Apple's decision to go with a Retina display, which will make the tablet harder to manufacture.
Kuo also stated that the slim plastic casing for the rumored low-cost budget iPhone is also a reason for supply snags.
Most expect Apple to release the iPhone 5S and iPad mini around the beginning of summer 2013, but if Kuo is right, it could be much longer.
