On Friday morning's episode of "Today," co-host Savannah Guthrie gave co-host Matt Lauer the finger--but the question is which finger did she give him?
The controversy started when Guthrie had trouble operating a vacuum cleaner during the live television broadcast on NBC. While she struggled to release its lever, Lauer quipped that she never used a vacuum before. "By the way this is the first time Savannah has ever vacuumed," said the 55-year-old TV host.
"That is not true. That is not true," she replied, then turning and scowling while holding a finger up at Lauer.
Viewers seemed to think Guthrie angrily gave her co-host the middle finger as she assumed the cameras weren't on her. However, she denied flipping Lauer off on Twitter writing, "Folks!! That was my INDEX finger! Photo evidence proving my innocence coming! #fingergate #TGI," the 41-year-old talk show host tweeted before sharing a blurry photo and calling the incident a "faux controversy."
To make light of the confusion, Lauer tweeted a photo of himself leaving a room with a caption that read: "Me storming out of the office after your middle finger salute."
Though he was being funny and sarcastic, his joke seemed to fuel rumors that Guthrie was indeed firing the obscene gesture at Lauer.
"It may have been your #indexfinger but your face says #middlefinger," said one Twitter user. Another tweeted, "@SavannahGuthrie what message does the backwards index finger send?"
According to Fox News, a rep for the "Today" show said the tweets from Lauer and Guthrie "speak for themselves."
