Fans across the world celebrated last weekend as Daft Punk marked their official comeback with a new album that's set to hit stores May 21. They became even more excited at the prospect of a subsequent tour. That's what bands do. They tour to promote their new material, right? Tragically, that's not the case with Daft Punk.
Rumors of a Coachella appearance from the world-renowned electronic synth pop duo have officially been squandered, as well as any hopes of a 2013 tour. Coachella takes place just one month prior to the release of the group's upcoming album Random Access Memories, so a live show would generate major attention and excitement leading up to May 21, right? Wrong again. A representative has made it clear to Rolling Stone that "Daft Punk is not performing at Coachella this year." Sigh.
But perhaps not all is lost. What about the rumors that Daft Punk will be gracing the stage at this year's Glastonbury festival? Nope. Our hopes and dreams are shot down once again. Glastonbury announced its official lineup earlier this week and Daft Punk is nowhere to be seen on the star-studded list.
Now that doesn't mean that the duo won't make a surprise appearance at either of the two major festivals, or any summer festivals for that matter, but let's not get our hopes up. The band has actively denied any rumors of festival performances or any 2013 tour dates. Why get all excited when the truth is they could wait a year, or even several years to go on tour, leaving fans to dance to the new Daft Punk album alone in their bedrooms. They did it with Random Access Memories. The upcoming album marks their first studio full-length since 2005's Human After All. That's eight years of agony.
There's no reason not to look forward to a Daft Punk tour, just don't get your hopes too high for a 2013 show. Any recent rumors of live performances have been shot down without a trace of sympathy. It will happen, just maybe not this year.
