Just when we think we've seen it all, HBO surprises us with a new "Game of Thrones" promo in anticipation of the season three premiere next weekend. This time around, the promo takes an interesting twist. Instead of focusing on dragons, warfare and romance, the series is compared to basketball, with none other than Carmelo Anthony narrating the 30-second trailer.
The NBA all-star is featured practicing his ball handling and jump shot interspersed with clips from the upcoming "Game of Thrones" season.
"The journey here is no easy one. It's no place for the weak or the timid. When defeat casts you aside, and victory makes you revered, your legacy is defined. A great war is underway. Who will prevail?" Anthony says with ominous intensity.
Although it may seem strange, the connection between Anthony and "Game of Thrones" is very effective. Anthony practices in the dark and moves with the ball as clips of lashing swords are strewn throughout his routine. The editing style and Anthony's commentary is fitting of both "Game of Thrones" and a basketball game.
The only question left is, why did HBO decide to bridge the gap between basketball and "Game of Thrones?" At no point is there any reference to the NBA, so Anthony must have been approached independently to be a spokesman for season three. Interesting choice. What if diehard Boston or Denver fans now boycott the show after Anthony's cameo? HBO must be confident that season three of "Game of Thrones" will knock our socks off. Let's sure hope so.
"Game of Thrones" will return to HBO on Sunday, March 31. Check out the newest promo featuring Carmelo Anthony below.
