Get ready for a new wave of battles in price, release dates, specs and news as a fourth company seems to have its mind set in producing none other than the smartwatch.
To start, Apple is allegedly working on a smart watch which would feature similar characteristics to a smartphone. Now in March, reports state three additional companies are planning to tackle the same idea.
Samsung has confirmed their smart watch intentions. "We've been preparing the watch product for so long," said Samsung's Mobile Business Executive Vice President Lee Young Hee. "We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."
Then on Friday, Latinos Post reported on a Google patent from October 2011 detailing a "smart-watch [that] can include a wristband, a base, and a flip up portion."
The Google patent story was provided by the Financial Times, stating the smart watch would be developed through their Android division.
Today, LG Electronics is reportedly developing its own variant for the smartwatch.
A source has told Korea Times that the South Korean-based company is also developing a next-generation wrist watch, "along with an innovative smart product similar to Internet giant Google's Glass, was part of its long-term strategy to keep its competitiveness in the volatile information technology industry."
"It is one major part of many currently non-commercialized products under development by LG Electronics," the source told Korea Times. "The company has spared no efforts to invest in products that it believes are must-haves to stay ahead technology wise in the market, whatever the situation maybe."
The source did not state if the LG smart watch will run on the Android or the new Firefox operating systems, but many consider both as "viable" options for the company.
No launch dates have been speculated for any of the smart watches in development.
