Megan Crafton, a 22-year-old cheerleading coach of an Indianapolis high school, on Thursday pleaded not guilty on charges of seducing a 17-year-old boy from the school she works for.
Crafton was arrested last week after she turned herself to authorities but was soon after released on bond with the help of her lawyer G. Allen Lidy the same day of her arrest.
Crafton admitted to police authorities of performing oral sex on the unidentified high school boy who plays for the basketball team.
The incident reportedly took place inside Crafton's car at a Shelbyville grocery store parking lot in January.
Crafton's lawyer gave reason for Megan to plead not guilty since, "She wasn't his coach. She wasn't his teacher. She wasn't his teacher's assistant," she defended.
In Indiana, it is legal for adults to engage in sexual activity with someone 16 or older except in the cases where their jobs hold authority or supervision over them.
In Crafton's case, although she complied with the first part of the law, she broke it in the second part. Prosecutors state she was clearly in the position of supervising the boy.
"We wouldn't be having this conversation if it was her and some other gentleman who doesn't go to the school, or isn't part of the school system," a lieutenant at the Shelbyville Police Department Michael Turner told Fox Sports.
"Unfortunately in this case, it was and it made it illegal. When she signed on as an assistant cheerleading coach, she took a responsibility that she wouldn't have relations at that school," he continued.
The court set a jury trial for Crafton scheduled on September 24.
