Final Fantasy Versus 13 was first announced over seven years ago, with very little information about the game since then. Now, it appears that the game has been retitled Final Fantasy 15 (Final Fantasy 14 being the still-in-progress MMO the company is making). In addition, the game is rumored to now be a PlayStation 4-exclusive, as Sony has stepped in to co-develop the game, according to a source speaking to VG Leaks.
Final Fantasy Versus 13 was announced in 2006, at the same time as Final Fantasy 13, but has had trouble seeing the light of day. According to the source, the game was stopped quietly two years ago, but not cancelled. It was then that Sony stepped in, and the game began its transition to becoming Final Fantasy 15. This was all complicated by the utter disaster that was Final Fantasy 14, which had to be rebuilt from the ground up. This obviously delayed the development of Verses 13/15 considerably.
By this point many had assumed the project was cancelled, despite Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada denying that the game was scrapped a year ago. Clearly, the company had decided with all the other problems facing the series that the game's best chance of success was a quiet relaunch and rebranding. More information about the game is expected to be released at E3 in June.
It will be interesting to see how much of the original concepts from Final Fantasy Versus 13 stay in the new game, or if the game has been radically changed in the long process of development. There are certainly many gamers, after all this time, who are hoping that Square Enix can pull together a quality game, and avoid another disaster like Final Fantasy 14.
