On Tuesday March 19th the Bavarian State Opera revealed their 2013-2014 season.
The Munich based opera company will present six new productions. Verdi's bicentennial will be celebrated with a new production of "La Forza del Destino" with tenor Jonas Kaufmann and soprano Anja Harteros. Strauss' 150th anniversary will be celebrated with "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" in a new production with Johan Botha and Adrianne Pieczonka.
Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito," Zimmerman's "Die Soldaten," Rossini's "Guillaume Tell," Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," and Monteverdi's L'Orfeo will also receive new productions.
Many favorites will return to the stage with starry casts. Soprano Kristine Opolais will return in her acclaimed portrayal of Rusalka and will also sing Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." She will also star in "Tito."
Soprano Diana Damrau will continue to tour her Violetta in her house role debut in Verdi's La "Traviata" She will be joined by Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja who also sings the title role in Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffman."
Rolando Villazon will also return to Munich for a different run of "Traviata." Kaufmann also return to Manrico in Verdi's "Il Trovatore."
One of the most anticipated revivals will be Verdi's "Macbeth" which will star Russian Soprano Anna Netrebko in her role debut as Lady Macbeth. She will be joined by baritone Simon Keenlyside as Macbeth and Ildar Abdrazakov as Banquo.
Among the other stars that will align for the Bayerisce season include Elina Garanca (I Capuleti e Montecchi), Juan Diego Florez (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Edita Gruberova (Lucrezia Borgia), Danielle De Niese (La Calisto), Marina Poplavskaya (Guillaume Tell), Bryan Hymmel (Guillame Tell), Krassimira Stoyanova (Trovatore, Simon Boccanegra) and Pavol Breslik (L'Elisir D'Amore).
Other notable revivals include "La Cenerentola," "Ariadne auf Naxos," "Boris Godunov," "Cosi Fan Tutte," "Salome," "Rosenkavlier" and "La Boheme"
The Munich season will begin in September and will run through the summer.
