Havok, one of the leading engineers of physics engines for home consoles, will have the third version of their physics engine ready for the PlayStation 4 and next-gen Xbox when they come out, the company has announced.
Havok has been working on the next-gen physic engine for five years, and the company expects that this build will define physics in gaming for the next decade. Havok's vice president of technology Andrew Bond has released a statement about the power the next physics engine will bring to the next generation of gaming:
"Beta versions of the technology have been in the hands of a number of leading developers for some time and we have seen dramatic performance gains with simulations running twice as fast or more, and using up to 10 times less memory. Additionally the new core's performance is extremely predictable, eliminating performance spikes. We are genuinely excited to see how game designers will harness the additional power that we are offering with this release," Bond stated.
Developers are also singing the praises of the new engine, :
"Having recently moved to the next generation of Havok Physics, we've been blown away by how Havok's new physics technology is able to make highly efficient utilization of all available hardware cores with a very lean runtime memory footprint...we are really looking forward to making some incredible games with the new technology," 2K Czech technical director Laurent Gorga said about the new Havok engine.
While we have not seen a demo of the technology for the next-gen Xbox (which still hasn't been announced) there have been a few examples of the physics engine in action on the PlayStation 4. Needless to say, the new Havok engine is a step up from current technology, and should be a staple in gaming for years to come.
