Samsung has launched their latest smartphone and it will be a device all tech companies will have to keep an eye on, including Nokia.
Nokia's current flagship smartphone is the Lumia 920, and although it reportedly sold out in numerous countries, it probably will face stiff competition from the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Samsung showcased the Galaxy S4 during an event in New York City on March 14, outlining the new features and latest figures in specifications.
So how does the Galaxy S4 specifications fare against Nokia's Lumia 920? Should Nokia start planning for their next device? Or can they remain comfortable with their current offering?
When it comes to the display, the Galaxy S4 features a screen size of 5 inches, 0.5 inches bigger than the Lumia 920's 4.5 inches. The screen resolution for the Galaxy S4 is also higher with 1,920x1,080 compared to the 1,280x768 on the Lumia 920. The Galaxy S4 also wins in the pixels per inch category with 441 over 332 - something that translates to Full HD vs. Not.
The Galaxy S4 also offers more variety when it comes to memory. The Lumia 920 is only available with 32GB internal storage and 1GB RAM. The Galaxy S4 will be available in three internal storage models - 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB - and with 2GB of RAM. The Samsung smartphone will also feature a microSD card slot for the user to add up to 64GB of additional storage space. The Lumia 920, however, does not offer a card slot.
Both the Lumia 920 and Galaxy S4 can connect to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC.
The Lumia 920's rear-facing camera has 8 megapixels with 3,264x2,448 pixels. The Nokia front-facing camera shoots at 1.3 megapixels. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S4's rear-facing camera is 13 megapixels with 4,128x3,096 pixels and its front counterpart has 2 megapixels.
In terms of video recording, both smartphones' rear-facing cameras can record in 1080p, however, the Galaxy S4 can go up to 60 frames per second (fps) while the Lumia 920 reaches 30 fps. The front-facing video camera of the Galaxy S4 stays at 1080p while the Nokia smartphone declines to 720p, but both have 30 fps.
The mobile operating systems are also different. The Lumia 920 features Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform while the Galaxy S4 will come with Android version 4.2.2, also known as the latest iteration of Jelly Bean.
The battery capacity for the Galaxy S4 is higher by 600mAh. The Lumia 920's battery capacity is 2,000mAh while the Galaxy S4 holds 2,600mAh - of course, daily usage will decide which phone is more practical, as a higher battery capacity does not mean longer life, especially when considering new, resource-hogging features.
In terms of color options, the Lumia 920 offers a wider variety than Samsung. The Galaxy S4 will be offered in black and white variants while the Lumia 920 is offered in black, gray, red, yellow, and white.
