Nintendo has officially announced a Pokemon themed 3DS XL will be heading to North American stores on March 24. The launch will coincide with the release of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.
The Pikachu colored 3DS will be priced at the standard XL level of $199.99, and will also come with a 4GB SD card. It may prove to be something of a limited edition however, as Nintendo has announced they will only be available "while supplies last."
In addition, anyone who purchases a game with the Pikachu 3DS will be able to grab a free bonus title. By logging into Club Nintendo and registering your new 3DS XL with either Pokemon: Gates to Infinity or Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon between March 21 and April 30, you will receive a code for a free game. Applicable titles include Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, Star Fox 64 3D, and Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!
The 3DS XL is currently available in 11 different colors, with availability dependent on where you live. This will be the second special post-launch 3DS XL design, with the first being a pink and white console that went on sale in November of last year.
The 3DS XL is part of the eighth generation of consoles, alongside the original 3DS and the PlayStation Vita. It features larger screens and longer battery life than the previous 3DS. The screens are in fact almost 90% larger, while the battery life was increased by 86%. Overall, the console is about 50% heavier than its smaller predecessor. As of the end of last year, over 7 million 3DS XL's have been shipped worldwide.
