Certain Sony Stores across the country have discounted the 3G PlayStation Vita, amid rumors that the company may be discontinuing the model altogether.
Joystiq is showing that several Sony Stores have the 3G PlayStation Vita selling at $200. That is $50 less than the Wi-Fi-only models. That includes an 8GB memory card and a voucher for a free PSN game.
The report also states conflicting information regarding why this price drop is happening. Some claim that the model is being discontinued, others said it was a temporary sale, and other Sony Stores were unaware that the sale was going on. Sony's online store has the bundle going for $250, the same price as the Wi-Fi model of the handheld system.
Sony has repeatedly denied rumors that the Vita was going to face a permanent price drop. However, a price drop in Japan sent sales skyrocketing, keeping rumors of a price drop in other regions circulating.
This price drop has certainly caused quite the stir, as gamers question what is happening with the 3G Vita. With so much conflicting information, Sony will have to clarify soon what, if anything, is going on with the Vita. After all, it is in company-branded stores that the price drop is happening in. Until we hear from the company it is advisable to discount any rumors about the 3G model getting discontinued, or replaced, or getting a price drop.
Anyone interested in trying to find a discounted $200 3G Vita can find a list on the JoyStiq article listed above. We will keep track of this story in the meantime to see if Sony has a response to the sale.
