A 65-year-old woman is dead and a 70-year-old man was hospitalized after the couple was struck by a giant powerful wave in Mexico as they were walking on the beach toward their hotel on Tuesday.

Authorities did not identity the couple but the Associated Press reports the woman had a Wisconsin drivers license and the man who is in stable condition is believed to be from Nebraska. Reports say the couple's identity is being held back from the press until the victims' families are informed about the tragic incident.

The couple was staying at the Cabo San Lucas resort and were walking along the resort's famed stone arch when suddenly a giant wave struck and pulled them into the typically peaceful Pacific ocean waters, officials say. Navy rescue crews pulled them out of the water.

The victims were taken to the hospital where the woman was later pronounced dead. No additional information has been released at this time.
