In an update that has been long overdue, Eidos Montreal has announced that the next installment in the Thief series will finally see the light of day in 2014.

In the meantime, it has been revealed that Game Informer will feature the game as its April cover story.

Game Informer has this to say about the upcoming preview: "Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer...Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron. In order to survive his adventures, Garrett will have to pay attention to his environment and make use of the may possible paths through each of the game's levels."

Furthermore, Square Enix is quoted as saying to IGN that Thief 4 will be "a reinvention of a franchise that helped define an entire genre of games", and that the game will feature  "a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game's levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge."

While the game is still a long ways away from being released, it is good to know something, considering that the game was announced almost four years ago. The game is promised to release on the next-gen PlayStation 4, alongside the PC. Since Microsoft has not yet officially announced the next Xbox, it hasn't been mentioned by Eidos, although it's a good bet that both Sony and Microsoft's consoles will receive the game.

The legendary series is known as one of the best stealth franchises of all time, but it appears that Thief 4 may allow players to break from totally relying on stealth. Could Thief 4 play more as an action game? Stay tuned to find out more is it is revealed this month.
