The iPad Mini's sales are surpassing the two regular sized iPads in sales, according to latest figures.

The iPad Mini made its debut in late October with the iPad with Retina Display, or iPad 4, but it appears the iPad Mini is cannibalizing the sales of the 9.7-inch iPads, according to a report by NDP DisplaySearch.

The report noted Apple planned to sell 40 million units of the iPad Mini and 60 million units of the iPads.

"However, the reality seems to be the reverse, as the iPad mini has been more popular than the iPad," explains David Hsieh of DisplaySearch.

Hsieh added that Apple now plans to sell 55 million units of the iPad Mini while the 9.7-inch iPads will sell 33 million units.

Overall, the tablet market is expected to sell 254 million units during 2013, up 94 million from the 160 million units sold in 2012.

The news of the iPad Mini's numbers come as the next iPad Mini is rumored to be in development.

A Chinese Internet forum has allegedly taken photos of the back case shell of the next iPad Mini. The cover appears slightly thicker compared to the current iPad Mini. One assumption to the thicker cover is the long rumored addition of the Retina Display.

The iPad Mini also features 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of internal storage with 512MB of RAM, five-megapixel rear-facing camera with 2,592x1,944 pixels, front-facing camera with 1.2-megapixels, iOS 6 operating system, and available in black and white.

The 16GB iPad Mini model cost $329, $429 for the 32GB model, and 64GB has a price tag of $529. The Wi-Fi with Cellular models are pricier. The 16GB model starts at $459, $559 for the 32GB model, and $659 for the 64GB when signing with either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon.
