With the report that the deal for Alex Smith was complete, it looks like the 49ers are in the market for another big ticket item.
Not content to sit on their laurels after moving Quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City, word is that the San Francisco 49ers may be in the market for New York Jets cornerback Darrell Revis. Sources close to Yahoo! Sports Jason Cole claim the 49ers have begun the process of making a run at the outspoken cornerback. It's believed that it's a bit of a no-brainer for both squads.
The 49ers willl have from 12 to 15 draft picks at their disposal and not a ton of holes to fill. After all, this is the same team that came within a hair of defeating the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, but it's clear that they definitely need help at one position and that's cornerback. Enter Darrell Revis and more importantly, the Jets who are interested in moving him.
How interested?
Well, enough to be actively shopping him at this week's NFL combine. A potential deal has a high risk-reward threshold for both teams. Revis is known as one of the best--if not the best--at his position and would definitely help the 49ers contend for a return trip to the Super Bowl. However, he's recovering from a torn ACL suffered in week 3 of the 2012 season. The bright side is that he's projected to be healthy in time for the start of the season, but ACLs are never to be taken lightly. Also, how many draft picks do you sacrifice for a player that may essentially be a one year rental?Revis is about to enter a contract year and has made no secret that he wants to get paid.
Although it's rumored that the decision to trade Revis comes from ownership, the Jets have to tread lightly. The team may have gone 6-10 last season without him, but his injury was just one of many problems on a team with an ongoing QB controversy and a coach on the hot seat. Revis is arguably their best player and they would do well to get the max for him, even if that means waiting until he's healthy.
Other teams are likely to throw their names in the hat for Revis' services. It remains to be seen if the Jets will have the patience and wisdom to make the best deal and not just the first one.
