Already a favorite on Facebook and Twitter since his rise to stardom last year, popular NBA point guard Jeremy Lin has taken to new unchartered social media territory--Instagram.
Lin announced via his Twitter page Tuesday that he had launched a new Instagram page.
"Just started instagram today...follow me: JLIN7 2. Remember to keep voting at https://mad.jeremylinfoundation.org #MakingADifference 3. Nap time!" tweeted Lin a day before his team, the Houston Rockets (31-27), plays the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.
Lin's Instagram page, under the name "jlin7"--the "7" standing for Lin's jersey number with the Houston Rockets--already features various pictures of Lin with friends, family and at the Espy Awards this past summer.
Since Lin's fame exploded after his sensational stretch of NBA games in midseason last year for the New York Knicks, Lin has been a global phenomenon on the Internet, having been the most searched athlete on Google in 2012, according to Google Zeitgeist. He also had a documentary "Linsanity," directed by Evan Jackson Leong, debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
On Instagram alone, a page called Linstagr.am became an instant hit last year during the outbreak of the "Linsanity" craze, having collected more than 7,000 pictures related to Lin.
The fan favorite basketball star also plugged the MAD contest, short for "Make A Difference," from his newly-launched nonprofit The Jeremy Lin Foundation, in which the new 501k group will support three outstanding nonprofits that help underprivileged youths in Houston this year.
Fans and supporters can donate to the project as well as vote for their favorite nonprofit. The winning nonprofit will be visited and promoted by Lin this year. With 970,000 Twitter followers and 1.9 million followers on Facebook, the winning nonprofit could reach a lot of new supporters thanks to Lin's help.
